Fall Colors: black, gold, olive

I realize that I should probably start notifying my readers when I leave. sorry…I just tend to disappear. School started up, so I have been busy getting acclimated to my new schedule which now includes class and homework. Also, I currently do not have internet at my new home…so that makes writing in the night hours a bit hard. Oh yeah….and I moved.

Lately I have been thinking about Autumn, and fall colors. These are  my favorite for the season…What are yours?

social giving: jonathan’s card experiment

A couple posts ago I shared about For a Friend and their mission to create a place for people to give thoughtful and useful gifts to international workers and missionaries. Today I saw posts going around on twitter about this guy, Jonathan. He created a quite fascinating social experiment through a gift card at Starbucks.

Sadly humanity answered our hopeful questions of “are we good?” by “misusing the card”, according to Starbucks who shut the project down Friday, August 12th. I spent some time reading through a few articles about this experiment and the heart behind it…here were a few good ones.

So, what do you think of all this? How do you approach giving?

3 reasons to eat “kid” food

sounds like I am not the only one evaluating fears these days…seriously though, there is a lot to think about!

One of my current fears is not being able to maintain physical health this fall when school starts again and I have class and studying to add on top of my work schedule. I have this habit of easily slipping into a non meal-eating mode…basically I’ll go all day not eating much, and when I get super hungry I just cram down whatever is around and ready…which is most often some form of carbs. Not my favorite…But what do you do when you don’t have a whole lot of time to cook!? It’s not like I have the hours, or energy for that matter, to simmer tomatoes into a traditional Italian sauce or marinade and grill steak.

My new consideration- Kid food. Seriously…I think I can eat healthy variations of kid themed meals…a friend was recently sharing how much her kids loved “pizzadias” despite the cute name, they can be pretty nutritious…Sprouted tortilla shell, raw cheese, tomato sauce, pre-cooked meat…five minutes in the fry-pan…done.

What other ideas are out there? I don’t exactly crave chicken nuggets and PBJ with out the crust, but when life gets crazy you need to brain storm. How do you deal with eating healthy on a busy, changing schedule?

sending coffee to denmark

The other day I gave two cups of coffee to my friends in Denmark…from my desk in Indiana. For A Friend made this possible…a new website that allows you to support missionaries on every continent by giving small, specific gifts that meet their individual needs. It’s a really neat idea, and I got  a bit of a rush when I finished up my transaction and was notified that my gift was sent.

This is how it works- if you are a missionary or know friends who are, sign up for a missionary profile! This allows you to communicate who you are, what you do, where you are living/working, keep supporters up to date with your life, and make up a list of things that would be helpful to your mission. If you would like to support someone, you can set up a log-in and search for missionaries by name or continent.

browsing missionaries and continents is kind of addicting…have fun!

and

enjoy your weekend.

how to be a blogging superstar

It was freaking humid with a heat index of about 112 degrees, but I sat under that vinyl, event tent drinking water every ten seconds anyway. Because the third most popular blogger in the world was giving a seminar…and I was going to listen. I even asked a a couple questions in front of all the other listeners. I know, pretty gutsy. In short his answers to my questions were much the same as all the problogger articles I have exhaustively read and all the tweets I have followed…Have good content, be yourself, and have catchy titles.

lovely.

good content? I love writing about my garden that doesn’t fully exist, and my nutrition research, while I haven’t actually been cooking for myself in weeks…not to mention my geeky coffee posts, oh- and the great give-aways that no one enters. Who wouldn’t love that content?? I mean if nina  can talk about watermelon slushies and her summer weekends successfully, why can’t I?

Be myself?? Uh, that results in church people asking if I am ok. Church people- I love you, and that you read my blog…you are my dearest supporter, and I am fine. really.

Catchy titles??? ahem, look up…that catchy enough?

You may be wondering why I’m freaking out…I’ll tell you, in a neat little outline…because I like to number things.

1. I am not freaking out- I don’t freak out, everyone knows that…right?

2. I have dreams, people…I may be pretty grounded, but I have serious writing goals…and I get so inspired by the bloggers that I follow.

3. People have been coming to me for blogging advice…and I give it, like I know what Im talking about. If only they could see my stats and see how un-popular I am.

4. I saw this post today…and wished with all my heart that I could apply. It is totally my pre-dream job, dream job.

thanks for reading. I really needed to tell you that…don’t worry, the typical, pretty posts will be back soon. also, if  by chance you don’t know me and you’re reading…do you write? What’s your story…I would love to hear.

This past week has been incredibly hot! despite the heat and humidity though, i have been loving all of the different shades of green growing. My current favorite color!

so, do you have any creative ways to stay cool? I work in air conditioning all day…and part of me is very grateful for that, and the other wants to be out in the sunshine….well, for a little bit.
